Introduction

Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited (LMEL), have been granted mining lease over an area of 348.09 Ha. for iron ore at Surjagarh Village (Wooria Hills), Itapalli taluka, Gadchiroli district in the state of Maharashtra for 50 years.

Location of the mine

The mine is located near Bande village in Etapalli tehsil of Gadchiroli district in the state of Maharashtra. The mining lease area at Village Surjagarh (Wooria Hills), falls under South Etapalli forest Range, Bhamragarh Forest Division, Forest Compartment Nos. 197, 198, 199, 227 and 228.

The area is bounded within latitudes N-190 35’ 30.0” - 190 37’ 50.00” & Longitudes E- 800 20’ 50.00”- 800 22’ 20.00” and 4 km east of Bands river.
The altitude of the site is about 700m above mean Sea Level (MSL) with a peak at 710 m above MSL. It includes the prominent hill called the “Wooria hills” with steep slopes and clad with a thick cover of bamboo, teak and other trees.

Surjagarh (Wooria hills)

The major iron ore deposits in Gadchiroli district are located in three parallel hill ranges, viz 1] Surjagarh hill range, 2] Damkod-Wadvi hill range and 3] Bhamragarh hill range.

Surjagarh (Wooria hills) located in Surjagarh hill range is the most important and well known major iron ore deposit in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, in respect of reserves and good quality of iron ore.

 

Geology of the Area

Regionally the Surjagarh Iron Ore deposit forms a part of the Iron Ore Series rock formations, which are seen in great force discontinuously from Bailladilla in Bastar district in south, to northwards at Rawghat hills in Kanker district and then further north at Dalli-Rajhara in Rajnandgaon district, all of them in Chhattisgarh State. Surjagarh hill range is a westerly extension of these rocks in formations.

On the arc-shape Surjagarh hill range phyllite, Cherty Quartzite which grade laterally as well as vertically to banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) with development of iron ore at some geologically favorable locations, are exposed on the hill range proper and its upper slopes. On lower slopes and near the ground level, metabasic schist and granite gneisses are exposed. The Directorate of Geology & Mining, Government of Maharashtra has carried out detailed geological mapping of Surjagarh deposit.

Types of Iron Ore- Hematite

The types of ores are mainly massive, hard and compact, laminated or biscuity and float ore.

 

Reserves

The Directorate of Geology & Mining, Government of Maharashtra has carried out detailed exploration and prospecting works and proved the reserves. The total 90 million tonnes of iron ore reserves have been estimated. Out of which 73.6 million tonnes of iron ore are in proved category and 16.4 millions tones of iron ore reserves are in probable category. The reserves distributed in three main in-situ ore blocks namely WB, CB and EB etc.

 

Grade

The deposits having high grade iron ore with average 64% Fe. The SiO2, Al2O3 on the whole are ranging between 2% & 3% respectively and Phosphorus and Sulphur in negligible.

 

Method of Mining

It is fully mechanized and open cost mining.

 

Proposed rate of Production

Proposed rate of production from the mines in Peak Capacity is 3.0 million tonnes per annum as per Mining Plan and EC.

 

Mining and Developments

Forest department has handover 14.00 Ha of land for mining purpose and collector has issued work permission (Surface Right) for the same.
Further 57.20 Ha of land will handover shortly for work permission for the first phase of mining.

The mining activities were started from April, 2016 and working open cast with semi mechanized mining in the float ore zone.
